I’ve known for some time about hugin and panotools but never got to use them. This is a very short list of steps to build a simple panorama image on linux (note that my Canon A1000 does not have a panorama assist mode so the source images where a bit deviated).
Install
apt-get install hugin
apt-get install autopano-sift
Configuration
To my disappointment hugin did not worked out of the box since it had some problems finding the proper autopano-sift tool. The binary autopano-sift does not exist. I had to dig a bit into the scripts to find the proper configuration, shown in the image bellow.

First test
After this configuration it was easy enough to make a basic panorama. Just:
- “load images” in the first tab in order
- select “align” (this will call the autopano-sift tools and find the control points for the images)
- play a bit in the preview window
- fine-tune the parameters if you know what they are about (not my case)
- go into the stitcher tab and press “stitch now”. This will save a tiff which you can crop in gimp or your other favorite tool

Am dat şi eu peste problema autopano acum vreo câteva zile, în vacanţa la Sibiu şi când nu aveam net :D Am zis merci că una lume stă să întreţină cum trebuie man page-urile… Partea bună la panotools/hugin e că nu prea ai nevoie de funcţie de assist în cameră, compensează destul de bine la mişcări, dar nu poate face nici minuni. De exemplu, oamenii care se mişcau prin Piaţa mare din Sibiu i-au cam făcut probleme, unul a rămas fără picioare şi din altul a rămas doar bustul :D Încă n-am găsit o metodă reliable şi eventual open-source de a afişa o panoramă pe blog, încă mai caut. Anyways, destul comment, uite o panoramă dintr-un bike trip de-al meu, pe malul Argeşului, mai la sud de Bucureşti: http://www.panoramio.com/photo/14948694
